Google Chrome and Microsoft Silverlight plugin

Earlier today I had an unpleasant surprise when Google Chrome 42 refused to open Earthlight and kept offering installation of Silverlight even though the same version of Silverlight was already installed. According to an entry on Google Product Forum starting from version 42 Chrome will no longer support NPAPI plugins (which unfortunately includes Silverlight).

Apparently you can still use Silverlight by manually enabling NPAPI with the npapi flag. To do so please follow the steps below:

  1. Go to chrome://flags/#enable-npapi
  2. Choose Enable.
  3. At the bottom left of your screen, click Relaunch Now.

This is just a temporary solution as Google Chrome 45 will disable npapi completely. I think in light of this announcement from Google we may need to consider making a switch to another browser for Earthlight purposes.
